Training
The Scottsville CERT program offers a free FEMA Basic Training Course with the help of local CERTs. Additional ongoing training is provided at monthly meetings and other events.
The CERT Basic Training is held several times each year, depending on demand, and delivered in one of the following ways.
Online Hybrid CERT Basic Course through University of Utah Online CERT Basic Class
NOTE: You must be 18 yrs or older unless you attend with a parent.
Basic Training Units
The CERT Basic Training course consists of 9 topics, as shown below.
01 DISASTER PREPAREDNESS Covers actions that participants and their families take before, during, and after a disaster and as part of a community response team. The CERT concept and organization are discussed as well as applicable laws governing volunteers in that jurisdiction. |
02 DISASTER FIRE SUPPRESSION Briefly covers fire chemistry, hazardous materials, fire hazards, and fire suppression strategies. However, the thrust of this session is the safe use of fire extinguishers, sizing up the situation, controlling utilities, and extinguishing a small fire. |
02 Disaster Medical Operations, Part I Participants practice diagnosing and treating airway obstruction, bleeding, and shock by using simple triage and rapid treatment techniques. |
04 Disaster Medical Operations, Part II Covers evaluating patients by doing a head-to-toe assessment, establishing a medical treatment area, performing basic first aid, and practicing in a safe and sanitary manner. |
05 Light Search and Rescue Participants learn about search and rescue planning, size-up, search techniques, rescue techniques, and most important, rescuer safety. |
06 CERT Organization How to organize and deploy CERT resources according to CERT organizational principles. |
07 Disaster Psychology and Team Organization Covers signs and symptoms that might be experienced by the disaster victim and worker. It addresses CERT organization and management principles and the need for documentation. |
08 Terrorism and CERT The definition of terrorism and terrorist goals, how terrorists choose their targets, weapons terrorists are known or are suspected to have and the risk posed by these weapons, cues that help identify when a terrorist attack may occur or be imminent, and how to prepare for a terrorist incident. |
09 Course Review and Disaster Simulation Participants review their answers from a take-home examination. Finally, they practice the skills that they have learned during the previous six sessions in disaster activity. |
