The Scottsville Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) officially began in 2024, following the Town of Scottsville’s decision to designate CERT as an authorized volunteer response team. Building on the lessons from the July 2021 severe weather event that impacted downtown and surrounding areas, local leaders and residents recognized the need for organized, trained community responders. With support from town officials, emergency management agencies, and dedicated volunteers, the first CERT Basic Training class was formed.

Since then, Scottsville CERT has steadily grown, hosting regular training sessions and community outreach events each year. While many CERT programs across the country offer only a couple of basic classes annually, Scottsville CERT aims to provide multiple opportunities for residents to learn disaster preparedness skills and join the team.

Scottsville CERT members contribute hundreds of volunteer hours annually—supporting town events with traffic and crowd management, assisting in public safety drills, promoting fire safety in homes, and sharing preparedness information with residents. During emergencies, CERT members stand ready to assist with shelter operations, disaster assessments, and logistical support for first responders.

In addition to serving the community, Scottsville CERT invests in its own readiness by hosting regular drills, skills refreshers, and advanced training opportunities. We welcome all residents to take the CERT Basic Training course—and for those who want to serve, to become an active part of Scottsville’s preparedness and response team.
